Who we are:

The German AIDS Society (Deutsche AIDS Gesellschaft, DAIG) is a national scientific society representing all kinds of HIV/AIDS related backgrounds. Our central motivation is to halt the further spread of the disease and to make living with the virus as manageable as possible. We are committed to prevention and therapy optimization. The standard on which we measure our activities is the highest attainable quality of life and prolonged life expectancy for the people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Therefore, these people are closely integrated into all our activities.

What we do:

Therapy & Research

DAIG takes a strong stance in support of non-commercial and university-based research to drive vaccine development forward and to optimize therapy. In order to promote treatment according to the latest scientific standards, the German-Austrian therapy and prophylaxis recommendations are reviewed and updated on a regular basis under the society’s auspices. This is a joint effort with all relevant stakeholders represented including medical doctors, researchers and representatives of the public health system as well as people living with HIV/AIDS.

Advocacy
Public awareness of HIV/AIDS has decreased considerably in Germany and Europe in recent years. Our mission is to keep HIV/AIDS high on the public agenda. DAIG follows up on political developments and comments on the impact of laws and regulations on the wellbeing of HIV/AIDS patients, treatment and research. We fuel our expertise into the political process to make sure that the complex particularities of AIDS treatment and research are taken into account.

Conferences and Congresses
The German-Austrian AIDS Congress is organised biannually by the society in cooperation with our Austrian partners. It is the main forum to bring all stakeholders in HIV infection together. The DAIG sees it as an important occasion to build bridges linking science, medical practice, politics, patients and the wider public in order to enhance the struggle against HIV/AIDS on a national and international basis. On the occasion of the German Austrian AIDS Congress, DAIG invites nominations for the German AIDS Award to acknowledge clinical scientific research which has generated fundamentally new insights into HIV/AIDS and its therapy.

International Cooperation
DAIG is closely involved in international cooperation and research exchange in Europe and the US and increasingly with those geographic areas were infection rates are high or on the increase, including China, Africa and Eastern Europe.

The DAIG Bodies
The members of the DAIG’s board and its president are renowned experts in clinical research and medical practice. DAIG’s project work is implemented in three sections: The German Clinical AIDS Study Group (KAAD), the section Psychology and Social Sciences and the section All Around Women Special (AAWS). The society’s and the sections’ activities benefit from the deliberations of our scientific advisory board, in which all scientific societies involved in HIV/AIDS as well as patient organisations are represented.
